I've been busy going to shows and keeping up with my family.

Jane and I just got back from the AQS show in Des Moines, IA. We had a great time talking to all the quilters in our booth. The three-pocket purses continue to be the biggest hit of all the things we demo. If you haven't gotten yours yet, you are missing out. They make great secret pal and Christmas gifts.

Next in the best seller category were the Pilot Frixion Pens. These pens have a very fine point and the ink disappears with friction or heat. Great for tracing embroidery designs, as the ink disappears when you iron your finished project.

We've begun making plans for next year's $5 quilt block of the month. We will have it on the website soon. The kits will be cut in 5" squares from earthtone batiks. We will be using the pattern, "Five-Square Fanfare" and featuring the "Charming 5 Square" templates. There are six different templates. Be sure and sign up for the email mailing list so you won't miss out on information.

Maple Leaf Festival is October 15-16, so keep an eye on the website for special information coming soon!

Hope you had a great summer!
Roxane

Dear Emily reminded me this week that I have not posted lately. I've been just a bit busy with vacation, two weddings, etc. etc. But that said...We have four busses coming on Saturday, April 16. We are participating in the Cruisin' Kansas Quilt Shop Tour. There is a bus leaving from Overbrook, Severy, Newton, Emporia or Eudora all at the same time and making a circuit, all going the same direction. For $93.95, you get to visit all the shops and have a continental breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner included. I think that is a great deal.

We just had our 13th Annual Kansas City Shop Hop. It was deemed a success with lots and lots of first time shop hoppers. The batik designed just for the hop shops was brown with sunflowers and hawthorne flowers. Sunflowers as the Kansas state flower and hawthorne as the Missouri state flower. All the shops had different ideas for setting the 6" blocks together. We received a lot of compliments on our quilt. It is pictured in the photo gallery on our website.

I'll write more after the bus trip to let you know how it went. There is still time to sign up if you'd like to make the circle of shops. Look for us in Paducah. We are in the pink Finkle building where AQS has their sale books.

The countdown begins to the end of the year. But we will be open New Year's Day as that is the beginning day of the 2011 $5 Block of the Month. In January, you will pay $5 for a 12" block kit. If you bring it back finished on the first Saturday of February, you will receive your February block for free! By making your block each month, this tree skirt will only cost you $5 for the blocks. At some time during the year, we will have finishing kits available for a 70" treeskirt or tablecloth to use the 12" blocks. We'll load the trailer Wednesday night and head out bright and early on Thursday morning. Vicky's booth will get set up on Friday and she will open for her Prairie's Edge Patchworks business on Saturday. While she is selling her patterns, I will be shopping for the shop. Our friend, Dee Gerardy, is going with us to demonstrate our new projects. She will also help me shop.

On Monday evening, we will tear down Vicky's booth and start moving in our booth. Depending on our progress, we should be able to take part of the day Tuesday to play a little and maybe run down to Galveston. We open for business on Wednesday evening at 5:00. The International Quilt Festival is open from then until Sunday at 4:00. Then we load the trailer and drive to Dallas. We will get home Monday evening.

Thursday, November 11, begins the BBBETO "Deck the Walls" shop hop, through Saturday. Come and see our demos and new stuff we brought back from Houston.

Thursday, November 18, we will start our "Christmas Open House", featuring all the stuff from Market that we bought, and some quick and easy Christmas presents. We have lots of projects in mind for fun gifts for Christmas.

We will keep you posted about our schedule!
Roxane

On The Road Again

We are headed to Des Moines today for the AQS Quilt Show that starts Wednesday. We left home on Sunday afternoon and drove to Springfield, MO to pick up Joan. Made it to Paducah by midnight. If you are in Paducah and need a hotel, we would recommend the Baymont. It was very nice!

Drove to Springfield, KY and stopped at a fabric warehouse. Picked up some black & whites and red & whites to finish 0ur block of the month. Also found some pre-quilted fabrics. It was a good thing too, as we ran out of three pocket purse kits on the first day of the show. We spent last night, cutting and folding so we'll have some to sell today.

Last night we ate supper at Calhoun's, voted best BBQ in Knoxville. We had our table by the window overlooking the river. Everyone must have decided to eat there last night, as we had to wait an hour for seating. These shirts had been in the bottom for several days. I assumed there would be an iron at the hotel, so I packed my "Best Press" and off we went. Since we were staying at a cabin on the lake, no iron. I spritzed the shirts very liberally and hung them up, hoping for the best. By morning, the wrinkles were gone and I was able to wear them to the show.

So, the point of this blog is to let you know that your "Best Press" can be used outside of your sewing room. I now buy the refills by the gallon for me to use in the laundry room.

Let us know how you use your "Best Press"! We were discussing how long we've been doing this. We think it was 2000. The colors were blue and yellow. Let me know if you know when we started. The 2010 colors are going to be a choice of red/white or black/white. The ladies that come and sew on Thursdays, worked on sample blocks for our 2010 quilt. They all have a star motif and turned out very pretty. Thank you Norma, Janice, Mary, Shirley, Darlene and Ree!

"Stonehenge" from Northcott just arrived today. Vicky and I spent yesterday, re-hanging the store. Tuesday, we will work on the classroom. Helen and Jane helped finish unpacking and Vicky got the postage on the post cards and got them in the mail.

Our 2010 Block of the Months were revealed today. We have three to choose from, or you can participate in all three. The $5 club will be a choice of red/white or black/white, with an ocean waves center medallion, a border of seminole piecing and an outside border of flying geese. The traditional block of the month is an all-inclusive club which includes borders, binding, backing and batting. The 3rd club will use Vicky's "Garden Nouveau" book and will be all applique. The AQS booth sells quilt books and other AQS items. On Wednesday we found out that Vicky's new AQS book, Garden Noveau, had arrived at the quilt show. We told the AQS staff that we had the quilt with us that is showcased in the book. They asked if they could hang the quilt and so it was hung behind the AQS booth. Vicky's book was sold-out at the show by today. Roxane and Jane arrived in Des Moines about 3 pm on Monday and then sat in the marshaling yard for over two hours while waiting their turn to unload the trailer at the docks. It really did not take long to unload and takes the supplies to the booth. On
Tuesday they completed booth set-up in about 4 hours and then had time to do a little shopping.

Today is Wednesday and our first day of vending is complete. We had many lookers today and an ample number of buyers. Vicky Lawrence's patterns continue to be a big seller. The quilters also like the Bohin mechanical chalk pencil, the three pocket purse, and the cell phone bags. Tomorrow I will post picture of Vicky's applique quilt that is featured in her new book that arrived at the AQS booth today.

Home Again (for a short while)

We are on the way home from Houston. Just a note to say we are in booth 1830 if you come to the Quilt Festival. Today was the first full day and we are already out of the fusible cell phone bags. Tomorrow we will probably run out of the Bohin Marking Pencil. I have been sitting in the hotel room working on my order to be ready to take to Des Moines next week. We will get home from Houston on Monday and leave for Des Moines the next Monday. We've seen lots of pretty quilts and I'm bringing home another way to hang quilts. We leave for Houston on October 8. We still need to pack and load the trailer. I have one more order to get in and then we should be ready to pack.

This weekend is the first Saturday of the month, so we can expect to see all those club members, bright and early. Only three more months left, it's hard to believe. Next years five dollar club is going to be a choice between red and white or black and white. It will have a center medallion, with rows and rows going around. The corner blocks of each row will be the $5.00 blocks and the borders will be in finishing kits. We are toying with the idea of multiple kits throughout the year, so there won't be a major expense at the end of the year.

Also, we are taking enrollments for next years Block of the Month. It is from Timeless Treasures and is called "Back to Nature". The colors are warm and cozy, with pine cones and leaves. The border stripe is very unique and will be a nice finish to your quilt. The cost for this club is $25 per month. This fee includes all the fabrics for the blocks, borders, and binding as well as batting and shipping.

Mark your calendars for the Maple Leaf Festival, October 17-18. We will be open on that Sunday from 1-5. For those of you who have never been to Maple Leaf, you don't know what you have been missing! The whole town turns into craft and food vendor booths. There is a parade on Saturday morning and a quilt show in the old grade school. Lots of good ideas and stuff to buy. We are not open very many Sundays, so you will want to take advantage of that. Postcards will be going out shortly to our local mailing list. Let us know if you would like to receive our mailings, either by email or snail mail.

The end of October finds us traveling to Des Moines, Iowa for the AQS show. We should have Vicky's new book by then, so we will be showing off her fantastic applique quilt. If you don't get to see it in Des Moines, it will be up for our open house in November. If Vicky is around, she'll be glad to sign it.

Another date to set aside on your calendars is our Christmas Open House and the "BBBETO" Deck the Walls Shop Hop, November 12-14, from 9-5. We will be showing off the new things we find at market as well as serving lunch, all three days from 11-2. You won't want to miss seeing us all dressed up for Christmas. We have a lot of quick and easy projects that make great gifts for your secret pals and other special people in your life.

Well, life continues on and I'm off to change light bulbs. I don't like to get the ladder out very often, so I've waited until I have more than one to change, many more.

Hope to see you soon, either in the store or on the road
Roxane

Getting ready to head to Pittsburg, Kansas

I was reminded last night at the quilt guild meeting (thank you Emily) that I had not blogged for quite awhile, so here goes:

We are heading for Pittsburg this weekend for the Little Balkans Quilt Show. They always have very nice quilts and wonderful vendors. We will be demonstrating our fusible cell phone bags, the fabric greeting cards, and of course, the Bohin Chalk Marking Pencil. If you have not used this pencil, you are really missing out. It glides on smoothly, stays the same width through the whole marking process and removes easily. But, not no easily that it will disappear before you are ready.

We finally have extras of the bobbin holders and the new Clover thimbles. It is so exciting to be able to talk about new toys, that of course we all need in our sewing rooms. The class schedule is heading to the web page in a couple of days. I don't have all the dates confirmed yet, but you will be able to see what the choices are going to be.

I have even gotten to sew lately, making two of the "Grids and Grommets" tote bags for friends. It is fun to ignore paper work for a while and sew. Hope to see all of you soon, whether in Pittsburg, in the shop or further on down the road.

Happy Quilting!
Roxane

Poker Run Week

We are home from Bartlesville and we had a really great show. The quilts were gorgeous and the quilters were friendly and very interested in the "Bohin" marking pencil, the new suction cup handle for smaller rulers and the four-sided placemats. We ran out of all of them. I'm reordering today, so they should be back in stock for the weekend.

This week is the Poker Run, so we will expect to see a lot of you in the shop, picking up your playing card.

We will leave Sunday for Knoxville. If the traveling goes well, we might even have some time off for sightseeing, since I've never been to that particular area. Let me know if there is something we need to make a point of seeing.

I got home just minutes before our oldest son and his family arrived home from Branson. We had to hear all of their stories, the adult version, the 6-year old version, the 4-year old version and the 2-year olds version. Grandchildren are great!

Well, I'm off to work to get the ordering done. The show is Friday and Saturday from 10-5. Come in our booth and tell us you read about it on the blog and we will give you a free gift.

Our newest gadget is the thimble from Clover. It is soft-sided, so it is comfortable, but it will also be helpful for pulling the needle through (like a needle grabber). Everyone has fallen in love with it the moment they try it on.

July 11-18 is our Poker Run. Visit all six shops and pick up a playing card. Make your best hand and the winner gets a gift certificate from each of the six shops. No passports, no kits, no blocks, just good fun.

July 22-25 we will be in Knoxville, TN at the AQS show. We will also have free gifts there if you mention the blog. Barb and Norma will be attending with me and Norma will be demonstrating all the cool gadgets we have.

Stay cool and come see us.
Roxane

The fat quarter sale has been a popular event this month. We have just received our sample of the Grommet Bag and it has received lots of attention.

June is my stay at home month, so I think we will have a fat quarter frenzy. On Fridays and Saturdays for the month of June, we will be selling fat quarters at 25 for $25 in increments of 25. What a great way to experiment with colors you don't normally use, broaden your horizons, etc.

July will be a traveling month, with a show in Bartlesville/Dewey, OK and Knoxville, TN. Check out our website and click on clubs to see our block of the months for 2009. We are in the middle of inventory and packing to go to Oklahoma City on Wednesday. The Winter Oklahoma City Quilt Show starts on Thursday, January 8 and runs through January 10. Then we will be headed home.

January 22 starts my vacation. We will be headed to Kauai with two other couples from our church. The plan is to spend 2 days on Oahu, then spend 7 days on Kauai. Everybody needs to keep Vicky busy while I am gone.

The class schedule is in process, so keep checking the website for details.
Roxane

Here we are in Springfield, Missouri

I arrived in Springfield this morning and began unloading the trailer. Jeri Strode, from Camdenton, Missouri, met me here to help set up the booth. She doesn't know it yet, but she is going to be doing the demonstrating during the show and I have a bolt of fabric for her to cut for home (hotel) work. We got the booth set up in spite of my forgetting a bunch of stuff, like the book rack, the quilt poles and the charge card machine.

Then the fun began. We went to Haiks (one of our fabric distributors), to check out their inventory. Then we went on the hunt for our hotel. I should have turned east but I went west. Once we figured that out, we turned around, took the exit past the hotel, intending to double back, and the road was closed. So we turned around again and found the hotel just around the corner from where we started. It just got to be funnier and funnier the longer we drove. Needless to say, we found lots of places to choose from for supper. Texas Roadhouse won.

Tomorrow we open at 9:00. If you are in the Springfield area, come downtown and visit our booth. We heard that Taste of Home is also in the building, but I told Jerri no long breaks, disappearing to the Taste of Home section.

If you would like to be on our email mailing list, just drop us a line at oqc@embarqmail.com
I am going to try to be better at sending out weekly emails. This is a good way to find out the newest fabrics and sales. Yesterday was a great day, visiting with old friends and demonstrating the new Fabric Greeting Cards that we brought home from Nashville. They are lots of fun and take very little time. Before you get one done, you are already thinking of how to do something different on the next one.

Today we will be packing up and driving home. This week we will be getting ready for our big first Saturday. All the $5 quiltmakers will be bringing their finished blocks and receiving their free block for September. Our teachers are also getting their samples ready for display so you can decide what classes to take for the fall. If you enroll on Saturday or before, you will receive $2.50 off of each enrollment. Hope everyone takes advantage of this opportunity.

Make plans now to attend the BBBETO "Deck the Walls" shop hop, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The pencil lead has some wax in it for easy gliding and erases easily by rubbing with another piece of fabric. Barb, Norma and Jeanette are traveling with me and we enjoyed an evening at the Grand Ole Opry last night. This is a really quick and easy way to make a wallhanging or quilt. Even a T-Shirt quilt (You don't have to back the shirts with interfacing). Developed by Crooked Nickel Designs, she has some really great patterns.
Today we will start packing. I am doing a "Zapper" class for the Country Quilters in North Topeka. We will show all the new gadgets and how to use them. Sometimes, the explanation about uses gets overlooked in the everyday shopping at a quilt shop. Just learning about a new gadget gets your mind working and you start thinking about a ton of different possibilities.

Hopefully your schedules have let up and all those graduation parties and events are under your belt and you're ready to start sewing again. Have a good week and enjoy your quilting.
Roxane

Today I have been working on the class schedule for the summer. Most of our classes are one day classes, usually held on Saturdays. This summer we are offering "Machine Quilting", taught by Delores Rieck. This class is always popular. Back by special request are the "It's A Wrap" and "Stacked Posies Supreme". Our kids class for the summer will teach you how to make a pillowcase, an MP3 carrier and a pillow. You don't even have to be a kid to take the class.

Vicky Lawrence is introducing an "Intermediate Quilting" class. Beyond learning how to piece blocks, this class will go into more intricate piecing like Feathered Star and how to draft a Mariner's Compass.

For quick and easy to finish classes we are offering the "Tossed 9-Patch" and a new concept of iron-on quilts developed by Crooked Nickel, using the iron-on grid and the 5" squares from Charm packs.

Yesterday we received the Christmas line from Laurel Burch called "Bountiful Blessings".

You are invited to check out our website at www.overbrookquilts.com
